Black & Decker LDX172C Review 2017
This is a cheap little drill from Black & Decker and I guess it is what it is. Please don’t expect wonders from this drill but it will do some of the more basic jobs around the home. The LDX172C has a small 7.2-Volt Lithium-Ion battery so not packed with power, but has enough for those basics.
When I say basics I am talking about jobs like drilling some soft wood, putting up curtain rails, hanging pictures and minor tasks of that nature. A lot of people use this one for craft work, light modelling work etc.
When you read the reviews it would appear that many ladies use this drill mainly because of the craft type of projects this helps them complete. Overall it is a useful drill/driver to have around the home as it can do all of those basic jobs that need done around the house.

Detailed Review of the B&D LDX172C
At the end of the day, with plenty of real life buyer reviews rating it an average 80% satisfaction, this one is good value for money at under $50. Just do not expect a real work horse.
There is enough kick in it to use on drywall, drill through the softer woods and could get through lighter metals like aluminium. It is also a good choice for those who need a drill for their chosen hobby.
LDX172C Product Description
It comes with a built in Lithium Ion Battery. The advantage of that is that means that is always ready for use as it holds a charge up to 18 months. (assuming it hasn’t been used and drained) That is a really good feature to have as it is always ready for use.
It also has a keyless chuck which means you can change bits pretty quickly and not worry about losing a chuck key. It has a fan-cooled motor that extends the drill life and two drill speeds plus forward/reverse to assure the right speed for the job.
A good drill for general home repair and assembly.
This one comes with a battery but remember this one is only 7.2 volts so this is not a huge powerful drill. It is as I have mentioned fine for the smaller jobs around the home. It is lightweight and well designed to fit in your hand. If you plan on doing a lot of home projects with this one, then forget it, and buy a more powerful drill.
This drill measures 8.3 x 7.69 x 2.63″ so is small and light.
I have used this one myself for the smaller jobs like opening and closing socket outlets, assembling some home furniture, various small craft projects, hanging a few pictures and for those types of tasks it works really well.
If you need something with a bit more power and drive then check out my preferred list of cordless drills.
As you know I always check out any warranties that come with a product. This one has a 2-year warranty for parts and workmanship so that does offer some peace of mind. Just be aware that a warranty will usually cover parts and workmanship but will not cover damage or natural wear and tear.
Drills and Bits
This comes with a double ended bit which is a straight head and a Philips. Again that should be enough for the basic jobs. I would however recommend getting a set of drill bits and driver heads as this will give you much more flexibility in the range of jobs that you can get done around the home.
Below you can see a video review of the Black & Decker LDX172C Drill/Driver
Due to is size it is easy enough to store, and thanks to the Li-Ion battery it is always ready for use. So in summary a nice little drill for general home working or those who love their crafts.
Customer Buyer Reviews and Scores
The general impression of buyers is that this is fine as a beginner drill and is able to handle the most basic of jobs. For a 7.2 volt battery it is powerful enough and as I have mentioned can do most basic tasks.
It is one of the cheapest in the B&D range and at the end of the day, you do get what you pay for. The huge majority of the reviews that we read through were mainly positive. Any negative reviews we found were from buyers who were disappointed by the power of this drill.
We certainly understand that as this is not a powerful one and that is simply because of the small battery size. For proper power you need either an 18 volt or even a 20 volt battery that can produce a great deal more oomph.
We also notices that many ladies do buy this one as it is lightweight and handy to use. Many of these ladies are involved in different types of craft work such as making picture frames. This would be an ideal choice for them as it is small, compact and the battery life is top notch.
One reviewer had this to say about this product:
Perfect tool for small jobs around the house. Light weight, easy to handle
Another reviewer said this:
This is a reasonably O.K. tool for small DRILLING tasks but not good for tightening/installing screws.
And one more said this:
I would recommend this little drill for anyone who needs a general purpose around the house type
You can see from these that this product is pretty much as I have described it above.
Conclusion & Verdict
For your money the LDX172C is ideal for small project work and to use for the simple jobs around the home. We would not actually recommend this one if you are someone who needs to do a bigger project or use this as a screwdriver. It can do the simple things really well but it is not a powerful drill.
We have done a table here of the top rated B&D cordless drills which you can look at by clicking here. If you have a look at that table we think there are just better ones available for a few extra dollars. However if you just need a drill for quick use around the house then the LDX172C will certainly meet that need.
