Best Cordless Drill - Top 10 Reviews and Buyer's Guide

There are a number of leading tool brands who make the best cordless drills. These range from the very high end and well known manufacturers, and all the way through to those who provide basic cordless drills at cheaper prices.

In this article we will have a look at which of these will suit you the best.

The makers of drills these days, now include many features as standard. However as long as they have all the basic features in place, then nearly any drill will do your job.

With cordless drills however, the key feature that you need to have is a battery that delivers power and lasts for a long time.

These days that will almost always be a Lithium-Ion battery. This is often referred to as a Li-Ion. The days of the older NiCad batteries are coming to an end though they are still in circulation.

My advice though is to go with a Lithium-Ion battery and as such I will examine the brands and manufacturers who offer these as their main core drilling products.

Cordless Drills - Understand Bare Tools before Buying

Many brands now offer what is called a bare tool. That is they sell you the tool without the battery. Now clearly with a cordless drill, you need both the drill and the battery to make it work.

The good news is that once you buy a battery, then that can be used with a range of other tools from the same brand.

The only other main consideration for you is to consider what other tools you may wish to buy. For example you can get cordless screwdrivers, impact drivers and various other cordless tools.

The good news is, that if you stick with one brand, then you can use the same battery for all of these.

If for example you decided that you liked Dewalt as a brand, then the battery you would get with your cordless drill, will also always fit their impact drivers, saws, screwdrivers etc.

This will save you money as you simply have to buy the actual tool rather than always have to buy both the tool and another battery. The disadvantage of doing this is that you are then pretty much stuck with that brand for all of your tools. (assuming you want to avoid buying another battery)

Some people are OK with doing this, whereas other people like to be able to pick a different brand for each specific tool.

Whichever decision you make, if this is your choice, will come down to which brand you prefer and like the best. Let's have a look at which brands are available for cordless drills and which are the best.

Top 10 List of Cordless Drills

This list has been put together using two main criteria. Those are the highest rated by actual buyers and also value for money. Underneath you will see a quick snap shot of all of them.

Underneath those quick look features, you will see a more detailed review on each one.

All of the ones on my preferred list are good cordless drills. They have all got very good ratings. They differ mainly by price, the brand and features such as the battery power.

Detailed Cordless Drill Reviews

The above tables give you a snapshot of what we think are the best cordless drills available. The more expensive ones are usually combination kits, where you get a couple of tools.

We included those as we think they offer better value, than buying a stand alone cordless drill.

Let's have a look at them in more detail.

No 1 CHOICE - Dewalt DCK281D2 20V Max XR Lithium Ion Brushless Compact Drill/Driver & Impact Driver Combo Kit

As you can imagine the Dewalt Brand will almost always top the list when it comes to picking the best brands. This is the brand that almost all professionals and contractors will use.

Their products are very high quality, built to stand the rigours of hard work and abuse and yet deliver great results.

They are also the most expensive and the decision is are you willing to spend the money to get the very best drills on the market? Unless you plan on doing a lot of work with a drill, there is simply no need to buy this brand.

However if you are looking for something that will last for a very long time and work every single time, then this brand will not let you down.

With reference to this one, you are getting both a cordless drill/driver and an Impact Driver. So two tools, two batteries and a charger along with the kit bag. That is a lot of product, and high quality product that will last you for years.

No 2 CHOICE - Milwaukee 2691-22 18-Volt Compact Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit

The Milwaukee, with their distinctive red branding are also one of the very best manufacturers of tools, both corded and cordless. Like the one above, this is both a cordless drill and an impact driver.

We think the combination is pretty good value as it comes in at just under $150. For two tools of this quality, that is a good enough deal.

This is not a brand that we have used a lot. Those that do buy this kit, and there have been plenty of them, do seem to like it a lot. Hence the very high rating for this combination set.

This combination kit is backed with a 5-year warranty. It is certainly a very powerful cordless drill and cordless impact driver set. They are both light in weight, and both tools have LED work space lighting.

Makita are without doubt a serious challenger to Dewalt. Their products are aimed at the professional and general contractor market and they are certainly proving to be a very popular choice for many people.

They are currently sold in Lowes and also at the Home Depot and I have noticed them appearing in many other stores, both online and off.

This is an interesting brand for me as I have always been a huge Dewalt user and I find it interesting when a brand decides to take on something like Dewalt. There is little doubt though that they are making a huge impression in the market.

This is a 12 volt set and that allows Makita to keep both products really compact. They still deliver a lot of power, so do not be put off by the smaller battery size. You get a 2-speed driver/drill that weighs only 2.2 pounds and delivers 200 inch/pounds of torque.

The variable speed impact driver also weighs only 2 pounds and delivers 800 inch/pounds of torque for driving and fastening.

I have used these drills myself and I do like them. They are certainly still very popular with many people and they are also very well priced. For many years these have been in tool boxes up and down the land. They are of good quality and are certainly always decent value for money.

Like Dewalt, the cordless drill range from Bosch has been created mainly for the contractor or professional building industry. I like Bosch for gardening tools but I have also used their drills and they are indeed good quality products.

What I did find interesting about this brand is that customers who buy Bosch tools are very loyal to that brand and tend to stick with them when buying other products. It is a little like car drivers, in that they really seem to like a brand and will always stick to using their products.

The 20 volt Li-Ion battery packs plenty of power.

This is a drill/driver with a 1/2" chuck. The chuck is very high quality as it is an all metal ratcheting chuck. That ensures that drill bits and screwdriver bits will not slip, thank to the superior gripping jaws of the chuck.
