This GCO18SB-2 drill from Black and Decker is no longer available at most stores. You may be able to find it as either a second hand one, or as a used one on some auction websites.

For that reason you may want to check out our top 10 list of the available Black and Decker drills.

The GCO18SB-2 cordless drill model from Black and Decker comes with 2 batteries (which we like) and a handy storage bag.

The average price of this drill is around the mid point in the B&D range and you should be able to pick it up at around the $90-100 price tag.

It is certainly a popular choice for many users so we thought we should take a closer look at this model.

For those who do not have time to read our full review, we have included a quick guide below. That will summarise the main features and benefits of this model, and help you decide if this is the one for you.

Below that we have included a much more detailed review along with other buyer reviews and opinions.

Detailed Review of the GCO18SB-2

Now we will take you through a more detailed review to see if this really is the right choice for you.

Features & Specifications

The Black & Decker GCO18SB-2 is an electric cordless drill and driver that is powered by an 18-volt NiCad (Nickel-Cadminium) battery. Removing or installing the spring-loaded and slide type of battery is accomplished by simply pushing a button.

We would have preferred if this one had used the newer and better Lithium-Ion batteries. The ones they have used will certainly produce more than enough power for most jobs, but the newer style batteries would have had a longer life.

The Chuck

The cordless drill comes with a 3/8 inch keyless chuck that can be changed quickly and easily. Having a chuck of that size is ideal for most jobs and as it is keyless, it makes changing the different bits you may need a great deal faster.

You also don’t have to worry about losing a chuck key, something I am very good at.

Size and Power

With a weight of about 7 pounds and dimensions of 15 (L) x 4.6 (W) x 10.5 (H) inches, the drill is light and portable. The drill comes with a 24-position clutch and a soft grip handle. The maximum torque is 115in-lbs while the speed is 0-750 RPM.

The Black & Decker Drill features reverse action and variable speed functions. In summary it has all the main features of a good quality product.

Key Benefits of the GCO18SB-2

For longer and continuous drilling, the Black & Decker GCO18SB-2 comes with two 18-volt NiCad batteries. One may be put in charge while the other is in use.

That will mean that you will always be ready to drill rather than having to wait on a battery getting charged.

The reverse action and variable speed offer efficient and controlled driving and drilling. It is suitable for a variety of materials such as metal, plastic and wood, and can be operated from different angles.

Changing the bits is easy and can be done during a job. The soft grip handle minimises any pain or tiredness that may come with holding the drill tightly or for too long.

Stripping screws is less-likely to happen as the drill/driver comes with a 24-position clutch mechanism.

Besides drilling, the GCO18SB-2 can also drive in screws and grind. A storage bag is included for safe storage and carrying.

The Good & What We Liked

Strong and Reliable

The drill is made from quality material (plastic, rubber, and metal) and takes the frequent bumps and knocks quite well. Delivering a Max of 750rpm and 115 inches-pound of torque, the drill can drill or grind through many surfaces.

Continuous Power and Performance

A user doesn’t have to worry about stopping due to a drained battery and waiting for it to charge. The drill is shipped with two 18-volt batteries that provide many hours of drilling and driving. Changing them is as simple as pressing a button.

Solid Build and Comfortable

The power tool features good design that is well-balanced. It can be used upwards, downwards, or sideways and will still deliver good results. The weight as well as soft grip also increases comfort and stability.

Good Control

The reverse action and variable speeds allows a user to control the speed and torque being delivered by the drill. This is especially important for light or sensitive surfaces that may get damaged due to too much force or very high speeds.

Changing drill bits is made easy by the keyless chuck and can be accomplished in a few seconds. The 24-position clutch ensures the screws are not driven in too deep or stripped.

The Bad & What We Didn’t Like

Battery Takes Too Long to Charge

The NiCad batteries take quite a while to get charged requiring at least 12 hours. This is quite a long time especially if the two batteries need charging. That is just the nature of these type of batteries which is why we would have preferred to see the newer ones which charge faster. We also know had they used those this drill would have been more expensive.

Not Compact

The Black & Decker GCO18SB-2 is not very compact considering it weighs almost 7 pounds. Carrying it around or using it in tight spaces may be problematic. The weight again comes from the older style batteries and is a known problem in any drill that used NiCad as their choice of battery type.

Not Suitable For Heavy or Commercial Use

The drill is best suited for small household activities. It doesn’t deliver lots of power for heavy or continuous use. Also, the batteries get drained quite fast under heavy use. Professionals or contractors should not buy this one as it is not designed for daily and constant use. This is a good enough drill for projects around the home. For daily use you would need to consider something like a heavy duty Dewalt cordless.

What’s In the Box?

Inside the packaging you will get

  • GCO1800 18v Drill
  • A Charger
  • 2 HPB18 Batteries which is very useful
  • A 2 inch double-ended tip (Straight head and Philips)
  • A Storage bag to keep everything neat and tidy

Customer Buyer Reviews

There are plenty of reviews on different websites about this drill. When you see a large number of reviews and they maintain a consistent rating of 88%,  you do know that you are getting a very good product. So despite the battery side of things, which is just our opinion the drill itself is a good buy. Many buyers like this a lot.

One reviewer said this

Can’t beat the price and quality of this kit. Two batteries plus charger and drill. Cheaper than most for 1 battery.

And yet another had this to say

Great tool for in the house. It works great.

Conclusion & Verdict

It is hard for us to argue with the ratings and we certainly can not argue with the price either. They are both good and it clearly is good enough value for the money as well. The only thing putting us off a full recommendation is the batteries and the charger.

Now it is good that you get 2 batteries for this price and as long as when you are using one, you are charging the other one, then you will be ok.

If this is not the B&D model for you, then it is worth checking out our full list of Black and Decker drills, by clicking here.

If however you forget to do that, then just be prepared to wait for that to happen. The Black & Decker GCO18SB-2 is a model that sells very well and buyers overall seem to like it a lot.
