Detailed Review of the Bosch DDS180-02

As we mentioned earlier this is a popular choice for many users. It comes with a belt hook and a hard plastic case to store the drill in when not in use.

You don’t get a lot of accessories with this model, but you do get a high quality drill. For many buyers that is what this one is all about – a good product that does what it says.

Below we have listed the main and most important features.

Key Features and Specifications

The cordless Bosch DDS180-02 is both a drill and driver that can be used in around the workshop or home. Powered by an18-volt, 1.3 amp-hour lithium-ion battery, the tool delivers a maximum speed of 1700 rpms and up to 600in-lbs of torque.

The drill has a depth of 19.0”, width of 14.5”, and height of 4.5 inches.

The battery-powered drill features a keyless clutch that has 18 +1 positions. Like most other Bosch drills it also comes with Durashield coating which is a blend of nylon and ABS.

Also, it boasts of the patented gear train and clutch system, Electronic Cell Protection (ECP), 4-Pole Open Frame motor, and Optional Flexible Power System (FPS). Other features worth noting include a built-in LED light, variable speed trigger, soft-grip housing, and 1 /2-inch ratcheting single sleeve chuck.

As you can see it has plenty of useful features but the key thing to take from all of these is it gives you lots of power and plenty of control

The Bosch DDS180-02 drill and driver features Durashield housing which is quite strong and durable.

Unlike the usual materials found in other drills/drivers, the ABS/nylon composite can withstand regular use as well as drops from heights as high as 10 feet.

Coming with two speed variations, a task that requires more torque is best suited with the 0-500 rpm range while the 0-1700 maximum rpm is effective on applications that require more power.

The higher speed is also better for drilling metals.

Although the drill comes with two 18V, 1.3 Ah batteries, and it is also compatible with a range of chargers as well as Li-on batteries.

The 1.3 Ah (slim Pack) is light and best for light duties, the 2.6Ah (FatPack) is ideal for more demanding tasks, while the 3.0Ah (FatPack HC) is the most powerful. At least you have choices.

High Torque and Power

With a maximum torque output of 600inch-lb, and 1700 rpm Max, the Bosch drill can handle a variety of needs. This is further improved by the Optional Flexible Power System (FPS) that allows a user to select between minimum weight and maximum run time.

Reliable and Quick Charging Batteries

The Bosch DDS180-02 drill/driver comes with a high capacity charger for the battery. It will restore a drained or dead battery within 30 minutes. And to prevent misuse and extend the battery’s life, the drill features Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) technology.

Versatile and Compatible

Although it comes with an 18volt, 1.3 Ah li-on batteries as standard, the drill can be powered by other more powerful batteries; 18V 2.6Ah, or 18V 3.0 Ah. Also, the batteries can be charged using the 30 min Bosch BC630, or the60 min BC660.

Light and User-friendly

The lightweight and compact nature of the Bosch DDS180-02 makes it easy to manoeuvre the tool in small spaces. It also feels safe to use due to the non-slip and soft-grip housing consequently ensuring the quality of work is topnotch.

No Clip for Holding Bits

The drill lacks a clip or slot that can be used to keep the bits. Besides wasting time when changing from Star to Phillips bits or vice versa, the lack of a clip can lead to misplacement or loss.

Loses Charge Quickly

For light applications the batteries perform well. However, when it comes to heavy applications such as driving in long screws (6 inches and above), the battery gets drained quicker This is also experienced when using the tool to drill on tough surfaces or continuously. That is what happens with most cordless drills. If you have to do a lot of this type of job we would recommend using a corded drill.

What the Box Contains

Items found in the box are one(1) Bosch DDS180-0218-volt Compact driver/drill, two (2) 1.3 Ah lithium-ion (Slim Pack) batteries, one (1) carrying case, one (1) 30-minute charger, one(1) double-ended bit, and user instructions.

What Buyers Said About the DDS180-02

With enough buyer reviews taken from different websites then generally speaking almost every review was positive and that is always a good sign. 78% of the reviewers gave this the full 5 star treatment and 5% gave it a one star. You can see where the majority of opinion lies. We read the one star reviews though and many of them were actually not about this drill at all. Here is an example..

It did the job fine, but I wanted to see if the claim that it was tough really carried any water so I climbed up to the top of my trailer and tossed it onto the ground. Not a scratch it

I am not quite sure what the reviewer’s point was here but I guess people are entitled to their opinion. We also found other reviewers there leaving poor ratings which had no reference to this actual product at all. The only one that we could find that was related was about the poor chuck, but again that was one single review.

We know of many people who turn to Bosch when they want to buy a good brand and very few are disappointed with that choice.

Summary & Verdict

The drill looks good and feels great in your hands. The power is great and we also think that is at the right price point. It is still however a big enough investment on your part. For your money you are essentially buying quality and also buying a trusted and respected brand. We like this one a lot because it flat out works and will get you through many jobs.
