Bosch DDS181-02 Review

By  Enda McLarnon

This model is no longer available in most online stores. You may still be able to get one of these as either a second hand or used model.

It has been replaced with the Bosch DDS182-02 Drill.

This is our review of the Bosch DDS181-02 18-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Drill/Driver Kit which is the number one choice for many buyers, and especially for those who love the Bosch brand.

There are now well over 300 buyer reviews online who rate this kit overall at a rating of 92%. That rating should tell you that if you decide to buy, you will own an excellent product. Please note that the manufacturer Bosch no longer produce this particular model, but some still exist in the market place.

This is an ideal product for anyone who wants to some work around the home and wants something that is powerful and reliable. It has a really nice balance to it and a nice compact size.

DDS 181-02 Key Features

The Bosch DDS181-02 is a small and compact drill that runs on an 18-volt, 1.3 Ah lithium-ion slim battery pack.

The cordless drill measures 7 inches in length, has a weight of approximately 3.43 lbs, and features a 1 \2 inch single sleeve metal drill chuck.

Generating a maximum torque of 600 inches per lb and two optimized speeds of either 0-500 or 0-700 RPM, the electric drill can work on various surfaces including metal, wood, plastic, and more.

That makes it a very good all rounder.

The Bosch drill features one LED light that illuminates the dark areas and a 4-pole Open Frame type of motor. The drill comes with two high capacity batteries and 18 + 1 clutch settings. Many drills now have the built-in LED lights but in many cases they are actually quite useless. This one works really well.

Key Benefits of Using This Drill

The first notable benefit of the drill is its two optimized speeds. The 0-500 MAX RPM is suitable for applications that require high torque while the 0-1700 maximum RPM is ideal for high speed, low torque applications.

According to the Bosch company, the 600 inch-per-pound of torque can drive up to 500 screws on every charge of battery. 5 minute non stop drilling is achieved from the li-on HC batteries plus the ergonomic and soft gripped handle offers maximum comfort.

The lithium –ion batteries can deliver up to 50% added run time in very cold weather. They are also really easy to change and you can do that quickly.

Another worthy benefit is the Optional Flexible Power System (FPS) that offers a choice of Minimum Weight or Maximum Run Time. Under the ProVantage plan, a three year protection plan is provided on the DDS181-02 drill. The battery comes with a two year warranty while the tool itself attracts a one year warranty.

What Customers Like

Strong and Reliable Performance

The Bosch Drill delivers 600 in-lbs, 0-1700 MAX RPM, and can drive in 500 screws per charge. This is quite impressive especially for residential and light commercial applications.

Compact and Lightweight

Coming in a length of 7 inches and a weight of 3.43 lbs, the Bosch DDS181-02 drill is one of the lightest and compact drills in its range.

Quality Built and Ergonomic

This drill follows Bosch’s tradition of manufacturing sturdy and durable products. It also features an ergonomic design as well as soft grip.

Tool Protection

The ProVantage protection plan comes with one year tool replacement plan, free battery replacement for two years, and free repair package for the tool in the second and third year.

What Customers Don’t Like

Slow Battery Charge Time

Although the battery delivers good performance, many customers have complained about its slow charging time. It takes approximately 45 minutes to return the charge to full after getting depleted. This is much longer than in other drills in the same category that normally take from 15 to 30 minutes.

No Holder for Drill Bit

The drill lacks a holder for storing or placing the drill bit whereas cheaper drills in the market have this feature as standard. This increases the risk of losing or misplacing the bit as well as inconvenience.

Slightly Higher Price

Compared to other related or similar products in the market, the price of the Bosch DDS181-02 is slightly higher.

Not a Commercial Drill

The drill is best suited for domestic purposes and light applications. The battery can support nonstop drilling for 5 minutes while charging takes up to 45 minutes.

What’s in the Box?

One(1) Bosch DDS181-02 Compact Tough drill/driver kit with two 18-volt lithium-ion Slim Pack batteries, operating manual, one(1) carrying case, and bits.

Summary & Verdict

The DDS181-02 gets super reviews and maintains a very high rating. That means you are getting a high quality drill at an affordable price. A few people thought this drill was too expensive but I have to say I disagree with them. For what you are getting in quality this is in my opinion a very good buy.

There are cheaper models and brands available but I would not argue with over 230 buyer reviews and a 4.7 out of 5 star rating.
