In this article we review the Delta band saw that has the model number 28-400. Many woodworkers say that a workshop is simply never complete unless it has a good quality band saw. Now right off the bat this particular product is not cheap at around $700, but it is probably the best one in the market.
If you have read my article on the top 10 band saws, then you will know there are two main types, the bench style and the stand style.
This one has the full steel frame making it I suppose the luxury end of the band saw market. You can see from the image to the right that this one looks great. It is one that any owner would be proud to own and have in their workshop.
Irrespective of its great looking appearance and really good ratings by real life buyers, we still have to consider if this one is exactly right for your own particular needs.

If like us, you like to know more detail about a product before buying it, then you will enjoy my review down below.
Key Features Explained
The Delta 28-400 features a conveniently large table for working on and is said to have a European feel to it. The machine weighs 160 pounds and is made out of steel which reduces all flexing with an aluminium trunnion table support.
The table support ensures a long lasting durability. The band saw is very well finished both inside and out. Some others have commented on having a bit of difficult when constructing the band saw. But overall the approval rating for this saw is high.
Delta definitely created a quality piece of shop equipment. All components fit together nicely and only the finest materials are used. The Delta 28-400 also collects any dust or debris very efficiently. You won’t have to worry about massive amounts of dust cluttering the work space.
The table features small holes which help in collecting the dust. With these small holes, more than 90% of the dust is collected and removed from the space. You can expect a clean environment when using this saw. There is also a convenient power switch with a lock key.
The amount of sound produced from this machine is very minimal. While working with the machine, it is much more enjoyable since there is less noise to cause distractions and just overall annoyance. You are even able to talk to other people in the room without having to raise your voice.
This can be a huge benefit if you want a machine that isn’t producing a large amount of sound.
The cast-iron table top has a smooth surface and appears to be polished well. The miter slot is also machined very well and accepts most common miter gauges.
Some miter gauges that are accepted is the 3/8′ and the 3/4′. The table top can also be titled to allow for bevel cuts.
The bevel angle gauge on the machine is mounted just below the table.
The blades feature precision ball bearing roller guides. These are both above and below the table top surface. These guides are easy to set and place. If you need to adjust a guide, it can be very easy to do.
Over some time of using the band saw, you will get used to adjusting these guides and it will end up taking you very little time to do.
The blade wheels are made out of aluminium and have a rubber surface to grab the blade. These wheels adjust very easily and offer a high degree of precision. Some users in the industry prefer iron cast wheels, but don’t let that make you stray away from an aluminium wheel. The aluminium wheel does exactly what it has to do very well.
Overall Performance of the Delta 28-400
The type of performance you can get out of this machine is great. It can be used to cut curves, small delicate pieces, and can saw larger lumber.
However when you are cutting larger lumber, it only can hold wood that is 6 inches tall. Anything taller and you will begin to have some problems when cutting wood. This may be a bit restricting but the overall performance of the Delta 28-400 makes up for this.
The motor is a 1 HP, TEFC and allows for 2 speeds. The two speed drive ensures less belt tensioning when working. This motor is sure to cut through any materials that you need especially when you are cutting non-ferrous metals, the band saw is even more powerful.
As said earlier, the motor is quiet and offers a smooth cut every time.
Only a couple items are missing from the previous 28-206 model. For one it does not have a quick-release blade tensioner. This model will also not accept a height riser like the previous models. You are not able to make the depth of the re-saw higher.
Other than that you just don’t receive many accessories but the product itself is great quality. Many of these other products can be purchased and allow this machine to preform even better than it already is able to.
The required fine tuning for the 28-400 is very minor and allows you to get to work on your project a lot quicker. This easy set up allows this saw to stand out from the competitors.
Overall though, for the current price, we think it is very good value for money.
