Dewalt DW715 Miter Saw Review

By  Enda McLarnon

This is my review of the DEWALT DW715 power miter saw. I think this one is probably the best choice available for someone who needs to work on a lot of miter jointing in wood. I am sure like many of you I made my first miter joint at woodwork class.

I will certainly never forget my first standard 45 degree cut, that simply refused to join seamlessly together. I was not the only one of course and I am convinced the saw I was using that day was faulty. (Well that’s my excuse, and I am sticking to it)

Understanding Cross Cutting, Bevel and Miter Joints

The serious professional or trade’s person will know all about these, but for those that are being inquisitive, I will take a few sentences to explain these, before doing my full review on this powerful miter saw from DEWALT.

Cross Cutting vs Rip Cutting

  • In simple terms a rip cut is one that is made parallel to the grain and is usually done with a table saw, a band saw or a hand rip saw.
  • Cross cutting actually shears the fibers of the wood and is usually done with a miter saw or a chop saw.

What Is  A Bevel Cut?

In the simplest of terms, it is nothing more than an angled cut through a piece of wood. The angle is what makes it a bevel.

What Is A Miter Joint?

This is where two pieces of wood are joined together at an angle, and then form a right angle as shown below. They are used in things like picture frames and door frames.

So that is a brief introduction used and it is important to understand it when discussing miter saws. So let’s start the review on this power miter saw from the DEWALT brand. If you want to read about more miter saw reviews then click here. I have also included a Top 10 List there as well.

Main Features of the DEWALT DW715

DEWALT DW715 15-Amp 12-Inch Single-Bevel Compound Miter SawDEWALT describe this saw as being a smart, powerful design for quick accurate cuts.

You are paying quite a bit of money for this machine and if you are anything like me, that is ok, providing it does what it is supposed to do.

That is what I always try to find out, when I am doing a review.  Let’s have a look at the component parts and see if it adds up.

The Blade

This saw has a 12″ carbide blade that spins at 4,000 revolutions per minute. You can use any 12″ blade with a 1″ arbor, but never use a smaller blade as the protector will not cover it, and that makes it dangerous.

The one you get with it is an all-purpose blade and has 32 teeth. This blade also has a thin kerf with an anti-stick rim.

You can buy other blades if you want a much finer cut and these will have either 60 or 80 teeth, depending on how fine a cut you need. These type of blades can be expensive at around the $50 for a single blade. You can also get a variety of other suitable blades for cutting things like laminates, plastics and metals.

The Motor

You really can’t question this motor with its 15 Amps of power and a speed of 4,000 rpm. It is a 120 Volt motor that uses roller bearings and has automatic electric brakes.

Mounting The DEWALT DW 715

There are holes provided in each of the four feet and you should always make sure that this saw is securely mounted and there is no movement. If you want it to be portable, and I am one of those people, then simply mount it to a piece of plywood (1/2″ or thicker) and then clamp it down securely.

That means that if you need to move it to a new location, you just de-clamp the plywood and take it with you. This saw comes with a convenient carrying handle.

Size & Weight

It weighs 42 pounds and measures 27.5″ by 18″ by 20″

Miter Detent Plate

This is made of stainless steel and has 11 stops for simple and easy set-up. The miter handle gives you quick and highly accurate miter settings and 0-50 degrees, on both the left and right. The tall fence will support 5.25″ moldings in the vertical position and 6.5″ base moldings. You can also easily slide the fence out of the way.

Bevel Cuts

This is good for different applications and angles between 0-48 degrees to the left and 0-3 degrees to the right.

If you appreciate quality tools, then you will love this. The bevel stops are great as they support the 45 angle cut quickly which speeds things up. I think what I like about it most is that it is accurate and light enough to make it portable.

For the record this is now a Type 3 version so they have continued to tweak and update this from two previous models. This one also works great with this DEWALT miter saw stand.

There are over 300 reviews on Amazon and they are buyers who give this power miter saw and average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars which is impressive.
