Porter Cable 382 Sander Review

By  Enda McLarnon

The Porter Cable 382 is an affordable and very useful sander that we think is very good value for money.

With over 200 buyer reviews at Amazon, this one has maintained a high and consistent rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Now at this price it is not a “top of the line” sander, but we know that it will do many of those jobs that need doing around the home.

Video Review of the Porter Cable 382

As you can see from the video this is classed as a basic random orbital sander but it it still an ideal choice for many home owners. He describes this one as a workhorse and that is exactly what it is. They are reliable and durable and will last for ages.

It has a port for dust extraction or a bag which is always handy.

As you can see in the video it is easy to use and it is comfortable in the hands. That is a lot more important than you may think.

  • Durable and so will last a long time
  • Feels really nice in the hand and super simple to use
  • Very affordable
  • A good solid workhorse

  • The cord is a little short – means you will need an extension lead

What Buyers Say About This

We have already mentioned the rating is solid and consistent. Here is what a couple of buyers had to say:

The sander is a very nice and usable tool. I would recommend it. You need to be careful when removing the sandpaper — the pad can tear.

This unit is a no-frills orbital, and it works fine. There is little to complain about, and little to brag about. Just select the grade of sandpaper, stick it on the velcro, hit the switch and go to down.

So as you can see it is a no frills and no thrills product. In our opinion anyone wanting to do some woodworking around the home will enjoy using this one. It will work well on light or medium duty work but not for heavier sanding or prolonged daily use.

The manufacturer has managed to keep the price down on this one, by not installing a heavy duty or more powerful motor. In all other parts it is very good. It is a simple but effective fixed speed motor which works well. Yes you lose out on a few features, but the basics are solid.

Summary & Verdict

This is a sander without that many features that we personally like to see on a good orbit sander. If you are looking for a sander that can sand down wood quickly and leave a nice finish, then this one will do the job. Professionals would not buy this one because they need to use a sander every day, and they also need a lot more features.

This one is as basic as they come and ideal for woodworking jobs in the home. You know what though for most people this one will do the job nicely. At around $46 we also think that this one is good value for money. All too often we hear people saying it doesn’t have this feature, or it can’t do that.

Most people just don’t need a whole ton of features and this one sands quickly. For many people that is all they will ever need. This 382 model is in the budget class for this type of product. For anyone who just needs to do the odd bit of sanding or finishing, from time to time, this one will do nicely.
